Could Hydroxy-Chloroquine Help Prevent Coronavirus Infection?


The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recommended the use of a drug called Hydroxy-chloroquine that can prevent the spread of COVID-19 in India. So what does this drug do and how can it prevent coronavirus from spreading? Traditionally, this drug was used in the treatment of Malaria and other rheumatic diseases such as inflammation in bones, joints and ligaments. 


What is Hydroxy-Choloroquine?

Hydroxy-chloroquine is a drug that has proven to be effective against coronavirus in laboratory studies and is backed by pre-clinical research findings. Currently, the Government of India has recommended the use of hydroxy-chloroquine for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the country. 

How Does It Prevent COVID-19?

A study by the European Union Clinical Trials Register conducted extensive research on the prevention of COVID-19 by taking 25 positive patients into the study. These patients comprised of five different age groups such as:

  • 12 to 17 years
  • 10 Years 
  • 18 to 65 years
  • 10+ years; and
  • 65 years

After 6 days of continuous medication, there was a decrease in the positive rates of COVID-19 patients of all ages.

The Indian Council of Medical Research has recommended the following dosage based on infected people and suspected people to have COVID-19. 

For Suspected Cases:

  • Only on day 1: 400mg twice after meals
  • 400 mg weekly once for 7 weeks

For Infected People:

  • Only on day 1: 400mg twice after meals
  • 400mg weekly once for 3 weeks

NOTE: This drug is not recommended for children below the age of 15.

  • Not recommended for people with heart disease and eye problems.
  • Will be sold only on a prescription basis.
